World According to James performing with the Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra
Tuesday 27 March 2018 6:30pm City Recital Hall, 2 Angel Place, Sydney

No, that is not a picture of me!! It's the unforgettable Richard Gill who is a leading light in music appreciation and education. The World According to James will be the first guest ensemble for a special series of concerts - Richard Gill Presents - A Voyage of Musical Discovery. A unique concert series at the City Recital Hall in Sydney exploring Western art music. Across three concerts, Richard Gill AO and the world-class musicians of the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra seamlessly weave their passion for historical context into musical performance. Beloved works of the musical canon are revitalised through the sounds of period instruments and stylistically appropriate performance practice. Our vibrant journey is complemented by our guest ensembles, who perform music from Medieval through Jazz to Contemporary exploring the commonalities and divergence's of each genre.

Greening from Ear to Ear Thursday 12 April, 2018, 8.30pm Foundry 616

“James Greening may be a joyous man but he is no clown – it is one of the noblest human attributes to know life and the world in all its cruelty and compromise and still remain positive and bright; it is a daily battle for anyone who thinks at all”. (John Hardaker)

I'm really, really looking forward to playing my suite of music, Tam O'Shanter Tales and new compositions from Paul Cutlan and Gary Daley and also compositions from Andrew Robson and Fabian Hevia at Foundry 616 with my ensemble Greening from Ear to Ear. This is some band I can tell you. We are going to have a ball so why don't you join us. It's infectious, in a good way!

Ten Part Invention Saturday 24 March, 2018, 8.30pm Foundry 616

Ten Part was one of the first bands I was asked to join when I arrived in Sydney. It has had such a profound effect on my development and understanding of jazz. It's a big small ensemble, with all the intimacy that offers with a seriously huge V10 of power and groove under the bonnet. Always a great night - “TPI’s splendid music results from Pochee’s giving some of Australia’s most promising jazz composers the opportunity to experiment and develop their sound. The result has been a corpus of distinctive music full of an indomitable Australian spirit”. John Shand, SMH

Nocktet: Mike Nock’s Large Ensemble 28 April Saturday 2018, 8.30pm Foundry 616

Named Best Australian Jazz Ensemble at the 2015 Bell Awards, Mike Nock’s all-star large ensemble returns to the Foundry616 stage for a night of the exceptional music Mike Nock is renowned for. This guy is a living legend.

Nocktet features both established artists and recognisable exceptional younger players – keeping, as John Shand (Sydney Morning Herald) puts it, “an eye to the future as well as the rear-view mirror“, something Mike Nock is renowned for.

It's like going home for me getting on stage with these beautiful people. Can't say much more. We'd love to share our joyous music with you.“More telling than any individual performance was the abiding sense of the band having a collective heart as big as a house. And it was this heart that was having the dialogue with the audience”. (John Shand SMH)

Promising fiery; passionate Cuban jazz, cha cha chá, rumba and more, The Entertainment Quarter's spectacular Trackdown Studio is transformed into a vibrant social club when Villafranco performs with a dynamic 19-piece Afro-Cuban Orchestra and guest Cuban dancer Adrian Medina. One of the great things about being a jazz musician is the opportunities we get to perform with wonderful artists from overseas. Thanks to Gai Bryant for bringing Elio and Adrian.
